As pigments transform into painterly surfaces, so histories flow, are preserved by means of narratives on masterpieces, restored forever like being crystallised, frozen. But beyond the apparent stable surface, material transforms. Light (together with temperature and other external factors) has its effects –slowly but steadily and often imperceptive– it can lead to a more porous appearance of an artwork, to the extent that the piece loses its apparent value and status.
Light is a continuing source and agent for Rosa Barba, whose cultivation of lens-based media has given us a range of glimpses into that which often remains at the periphery of vision, concretely, optically, spectrally, conceptually, metaphysically. Private Metaphysics sits in that line, yet its strongest power may lie in the way it weaves together an assembly of shots, that feel both too familiar as well as estranging. The abstracting grammar of this new film is magnificent, strong. Haptic, a glow. A shot of a red box-like container for a stored artwork appears reminiscent of Malevich’s Black Square or. . . The delicate, trained hands of a conservator could equally be that of an alchemist, partly surrounded with an aura of something remarkable, almost spiritual. Yet with this Metaphysics, from Private to communal, the focus is on the alchemistic inside during conservation, conservation’s often organic compounds, pulverised ingredients and its daily mechanisms (brush, press, cut-slice-paste, ...), not so auratic after all. Some impressive cameras/apparatuses appear as automata, animate beings. An expansive storage system becoming technocratic architecture means a self-contained world, ecology. And there is one brief moment of an ancient painting that is being restored with a little cushion sitting on the female figure’s abdomen/ centre/ navel/ heart. A pointer to the dedicated care of a conservator. Time it takes for repairing, re-storing.
Largely shot at the ALBERTINA Museum in Vienna, the film develops slowly. Frames and scenes of laboratory life and equipment give way to something anarchic in terms of apparatuses of all kinds. The rhythmic re-emergence of both abstract and concrete close-ups hints to atomic or protonic legacies in the alchemistic world.
In between, textual lines pop up, giving hints to underlying conceptual threads: The Volume is composed; A non-invasive, non-destructive analytical method; line four of the hexagon’s six sides; than the height of a normal librarian; Fluorescence Analysis.
And all in all, concluding with a fragment of a delicate sheet of paper, water/fluid dropping from its edge.
Ever-present in this metaphysics mediation is sound, crossing various realms, becomes sonorous archipelago. Partly electronic, partly technologic, metallic, stringlike.
When hyper precision meets pigmentary flow, dissolution, deterioration, and most recent technologies are combined with expertise crafts(wo)manship, this metaphysical universe may indeed not be so private, after all.
Private Metaphysics continues and expands the artist’s earlier explorations of a hidden conference, that began in various distinct museums storages, with its focus on storage and preservation as general cultural practices, rather than engaging with the narrow confines of an archive or depot. The storing systems receive the same attention as the artworks themselves, temporal layers blur, works of art–casually located next to each other– are animated into imaginary dialogues (‘conferences’).
